Yacht Charter in Italy: Sardinia, the Amalfi Coast & More

Italy is a charter of variety: no single “Croatia-style” cruising ground, but several distinct ones, each with its own character. Pick the region first, then the boat.

Sardinia & the Maddalena

The north-east of Sardinia and the La Maddalena archipelago is Italy's premier bareboat ground — Caribbean-clear water, granite islands, sheltered anchorages. Base in Portisco, Cannigione or Palau. It's the closest thing in Italy to easy Croatian-style island hopping, and the scenery is world-class. Book early; the fleet is smaller than Croatia's.

The Amalfi Coast & Bay of Naples

Capri, Positano, Ischia and Procida make a glamorous but busier cruise, with dramatic cliffs and famous towns. Distances are short but summer traffic and mooring demand are high, and it's more a scenic coastal charter than a remote-island one. Often chartered with a skipper for the tricky, crowded moorings.

Sicily & the Aeolian islands

Off Sicily's north coast, the seven volcanic Aeolians — Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli — are a spectacular week, ending with Stromboli's night-time eruptions seen from the water. Longer passages and a proper sailing feel; best for crews with some experience.

When to go & cost

The season mirrors the rest of the Med: June and September for the best balance of weather and crowds, July–August for peak everything. Base prices are broadly in line with Croatia; Sardinia can run higher in August. Budget for mooring fees, which are steep on the Amalfi Coast in particular.
