Yacht Charter in Greece: Ionian vs Cyclades vs Saronic

Greece has thousands of islands and several distinct cruising grounds, and picking the right one matters more here than almost anywhere. The three most-chartered regions ask for very different levels of experience.

The Ionian — the easy, green one

Off the west coast (Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakynthos), the Ionian is the friendliest sailing in Greece: short hops, sheltered water, a gentle afternoon breeze, and green, forested islands. Anchoring or tying to a taverna quay is the norm, which keeps costs down. This is the best choice for a first Greek charter or a relaxed family week.

The Cyclades — the dramatic, windy one

The classic postcard Greece (Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Santorini) is spectacular but demanding: longer, exposed passages and the meltemi, a strong summer northerly that can blow 25–35 knots for days. Reserve this for experienced crews who want proper sailing and don't mind reshuffling plans around the wind.

The Saronic — the convenient one

Right off Athens (Aegina, Poros, Hydra, Spetses), the Saronic Gulf is easy to reach, has short distances and moderate wind, and packs a lot of pretty ports into a small area. Great for a short trip or a first charter when you're flying into Athens.

When to go & cost

June and September are ideal — July–August is hot and, in the Cyclades, at the mercy of the meltemi. Base prices are broadly similar to Croatia; Greece often works out cheaper day-to-day because you anchor or use taverna quays rather than paying Croatia's steep marina fees.
