Yacht Charter from Dubrovnik: The Elaphiti & Beyond

The south of Croatia is a different charter to the busy central coast: fewer boats, bigger scenery, and a run of islands — the Elaphiti, Mljet, Korčula — that reward a relaxed pace. Dubrovnik makes a spectacular start and finish, though the old town's own moorings are limited, so most charters actually base a little up the coast.

The base

Charter boats out of “Dubrovnik” usually leave from ACI Marina Dubrovnik in the Rijeka Dubrovačka inlet, a few kilometres from the old town, or from Slano and Cavtat nearby. It's an easy transfer from Dubrovnik airport (DBV).

Where to sail

• The Elaphiti islands — Šipan, Lopud and Koločep, a short hop from base; car-free, green, and gentle for a first night.
• Mljet — a third of the island is a national park of saltwater lakes and pine forest; pick up a mooring in Polače or Pomena.
• Korčula — the walled town, plus the Pelješac wine coast opposite.
• Lastovo — further out, a nature park and one of the darkest night skies in the Adriatic.

Good to know

Southern Dalmatia has longer legs between anchorages than the Split archipelago, so it suits crews happy to sail a few hours a day. Winds can be a touch stronger here, which keen sailors will enjoy. As everywhere in Croatia, June and September give the best mix of warm water and light crowds.
